Who can take part

  • Child is between 0 and 12 years old
  • Child is in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU)
  • Child has or will have a small tube in an artery (arterial line) for routine care
  • Child does not have high levels of methemoglobin or carboxyhemoglobin (abnormal blood conditions)
  • Child does not have severe low blood pressure (hypotension) at enrollment
  • Child does not have a heart defect that depends on a duct (ductal-dependent) to get blood flow
