This study tests whether nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) can help reduce liver scarring in people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. You may qualify if you have moderate to severe liver scarring and are between 18 and 85 years old.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 85 years old.
  • You have been diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) – fat in the liver not due to alcohol or other causes.
  • Your BMI is between 27 and 40 (a measure of body fat).
  • A recent FibroScan test (within the last 6 months) showed your liver stiffness is above 9.2 kPa, meaning you have significant scarring (fibrosis).
  • You are not a heavy drinker (less than about 2 drinks a day for men, 1 drink for women).
  • You do not have serious heart, kidney, or liver diseases that would make the trial unsafe, nor are you taking certain medications like vitamin E, probiotics, or strong diabetes drugs that were started within the last 6 months.
