Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are in the ICU with a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (based on your initial Glasgow Coma Score)
  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) when you are checked for the study
  • Your doctors expect you to be in the ICU for at least 48 hours
  • You can communicate in English or French (for follow-up memory tests)
  • You do not have a known allergy to dexmedetomidine or clonidine, and your doctor says it's safe for you to take dexmedetomidine
