Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older and in the ICU.
- You have been on a breathing machine for at least 24 hours, and for at least 4 days but not more than 2 weeks.
- Your doctor says you are ready to start weaning from the breathing machine.
- During the weaning trial, you have an agitation score of +1 or higher on the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS).
- You are not allergic to dexmedetomidine.
- You do not have a very slow heart rate (below 50 beats per minute) or low blood pressure (mean arterial pressure below 60 mmHg).
- You do not have a brain or nerve condition that affects your awareness.
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
