This trial tests whether a sedative called dexmedetomidine can reduce agitation in ICU patients when they are being weaned off a breathing tube. If you experience restlessness or agitation during the weaning process, this medication might help you stay calm.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and in the ICU.
  • You have been on a breathing machine for at least 24 hours, and for at least 4 days but not more than 2 weeks.
  • Your doctor says you are ready to start weaning from the breathing machine.
  • During the weaning trial, you have an agitation score of +1 or higher on the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS).
  • You are not allergic to dexmedetomidine.
  • You do not have a very slow heart rate (below 50 beats per minute) or low blood pressure (mean arterial pressure below 60 mmHg).
  • You do not have a brain or nerve condition that affects your awareness.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
