New blood test for newborn infection

This study is testing a new blood test (called presepsin) to see if it can help doctors quickly diagnose sepsis (a serious infection) in newborns. If your baby has signs of infection, this test might help find the cause sooner.

Who can take part

  • Your baby is less than 1 month old.
  • Your baby has signs of a possible infection (like fever, trouble breathing, or feeding problems), or the mother had risk factors for infection during labor.
  • Your baby has not already received antibiotics before coming to the hospital.
  • Your baby did not have a lack of oxygen at birth (birth asphyxia).
  • Your baby does not have a known or suspected metabolic disorder.
  • Your baby does not have a major birth defect (like a heart defect).
