Who can take part

  • Must have moderate or severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as defined by the Berlin Definition
  • Must have been on a ventilator for less than 7 days
  • Cannot have acute or chronic liver failure
  • Cannot have chronic kidney failure or severe acute kidney injury (stage 3)
  • Cannot be in a prone position (lying face down) or have a do-not-resuscitate order
