Breathing support settings and kidney health in severe lung failure

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have been diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)—severe lung failure requiring a breathing tube
  • You have been on a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine) for at least 24 hours
  • Your ventilator requires PEEP (breathing pressure support) of at least 5 cmH₂O
  • You do not have end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis or a previous kidney transplant
  • You are not pregnant and do not have severe heart valve problems or advanced liver disease
