Exercise therapy trial for people with familial adenomatous polyposis

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis

This trial tests whether a home-based exercise program can help people with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) who have rectal polyps. You may qualify if you have FAP, have not had your rectum removed, have at least 5 rectal polyps larger than 2 mm, and are currently inactive.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with FAP (either through genetic testing or because you have had more than 50 colorectal polyps).
  • You still have your rectum (either you have not had colon surgery or you have had a partial colectomy that left your rectum in place).
  • You have at least 5 rectal polyps that are larger than 2 mm on a recent colonoscopy.
  • You have had no active cancer in the last 6 months and are at least 6 months past any cancer treatment.
  • You have not started taking certain anti-inflammatory drugs (like sulindac or celecoxib) or weight loss medications (like semaglutide) in the last 3 months.
  • You are currently inactive (less than 60 minutes of moderate or hard exercise per week) and have space for a treadmill at home.

Celecoxib and metformin for familial adenomatous polyposis

This trial tests whether a combination of two drugs, celecoxib and metformin, can prevent the growth of polyps in the colon or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) in people with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). FAP is a condition that causes many polyps to form, raising the risk of cancer. If you have FAP, are between 20 and 55, and have at least 5 polyps that are 2mm or larger, this study may be for you.
