Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have had persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heart rhythm) for at least 7 days.
  • You are scheduled to have an elective (non-urgent) electrical cardioversion (a procedure to shock your heart back to normal rhythm).
  • You have not taken amiodarone in the last 30 days or other heart-rhythm medicines in the last 7 days.
  • You do not have severe heart failure, a very weak heart pump, serious thyroid or liver disease, or certain valve problems in your heart.
