Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 89 years old
- You are having heart surgery that opens your breastbone (sternotomy)
- You have at least 2 of these risk factors: diabetes, severe COPD, long-term steroid use, weakened immune system, repeat sternotomy, chronic kidney disease (with GFR over 30), prior chest radiation, BMI 35 or higher, high risk of confusion after surgery, or heavy alcohol use
- You do not have active cancer, long-term narcotic use, severe heart failure (NYHA Class IV), nickel allergy, or a very low kidney function (GFR under 30)
- You are not already in another interventional clinical trial
