Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 80 years old
  • You have heart disease confirmed by angiogram (like stable chest pain or a recent mild heart attack) and need a stent
  • You are scheduled for a non-cardiac surgery (chest, stomach, colon, liver/pancreas, or gynecology) under general anesthesia that cannot wait
  • If you have cancer and are put in the stent-first group, you agree to wait about 90 days after the stent before your cancer surgery
  • You have no severe bleeding risk, heart failure, or other life-threatening conditions
  • You are not pregnant, do not have severe kidney or liver disease, and can give informed consent
