  • You are 19 years old or older.
  • You are having planned (non-emergency) heart surgery like bypass or valve repair.
  • Your surgery will involve a cut down the middle of your chest (full sternotomy).
  • You have not had previous heart surgery or recent CPR.
  • You are not currently using strong blood thinners or have chronic lung disease.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is below 40.
