Who can take part

  • You must have tried to lose weight with a diet and exercise program for at least 3 months, but it didn't work well enough.
  • Your child's weight must be in the obesity range (BMI at or above the 95th percentile for their age and sex), or they must be overweight (BMI between 85th and 95th percentile) with a related health problem like high blood pressure, prediabetes, or sleep apnea.
  • They cannot have had any weight-loss surgery (like gastric bypass or a gastric band) or plan to have one during the study.
  • They cannot have lost more than 11 pounds (5 kg) in the last 3 months without trying.
  • They cannot have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes with a recent A1c blood test over 9%.
  • They cannot have a family or personal history of a rare thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma or a related condition (MEN2).
