Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 4 days (96 hours).
  • You have tried and failed to come off the ventilator at least once (needed to go back on within 48 hours).
  • You or your legal representative can agree to join the study and sign a consent form.
  • You do not have serious heart problems, lung damage, bleeding disorders, or a pacemaker.
