Who can take part

  • You are 45 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for heart bypass surgery that will use a heart-lung machine for at least 1 hour.
  • Your kidney function is not severely reduced (eGFR above 30) and your kidneys are normal size.
  • You do not have active bleeding, a bleeding disorder, or take blood thinners that would put you at risk.
  • You have not had certain recent emergencies like a heart attack or sepsis.
