Diabetes prevention study with metabolic testing at Stanford

This study looks at different types of diabetes risk and tries to find the best way to prevent it. It is for people with high blood sugar that is not yet diabetes, or early diabetes, who are not on medication.

Who can take part

  • Your BMI must be 23 or higher (22 if you are Asian) but less than 45.
  • Your average blood sugar (HbA1c) must be between 5.7% and 8.0%, and you cannot be taking diabetes medications.
  • You must not have had a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months.
  • You cannot have active cancer, kidney or liver disease, or a history of pancreatitis.
  • You cannot take certain medications for diabetes, weight loss, or that affect blood sugar (with possible washout allowed).
  • You must be able to travel to Stanford for metabolic testing.

Early prevention for people at high risk of prediabetes

This study looks for people who are at high risk of developing prediabetes (but don't have it yet) and tests whether early monitoring with a continuous glucose monitor can help prevent it. It's a good fit if you're 35 or older with a high diabetes risk score but normal blood sugar levels.
