Kinesiology taping and shoulder exercises for shoulder pain

Subacromial Impingement Syndrome

This trial tests if kinesiology taping (a special type of tape applied to the shoulder) plus exercises that strengthen the shoulder blades works better than just exercises alone for people with shoulder impingement syndrome (a common cause of shoulder pain). You may qualify if you have had pain on the front or side of your shoulder for at least 3 months and have certain positive tests from a physical therapist.

Who can take part

  • Be between 18 and 55 years old
  • Have had pain on the front or side of your shoulder for at least 3 months
  • Have been diagnosed with shoulder impingement syndrome by a sports physical therapist (based on at least 3 positive signs like Neer or Hawkins-Kennedy tests)
  • Have mild to moderate pain when rotating your arm outward or during the empty can test
  • Not have neck pain spreading to your arm, arthritis in the shoulder joints, calcific tendinitis, frozen shoulder, shoulder instability, a torn rotator cuff, or a history of acute injury, previous surgery, or fracture in that shoulder
  • Not have had a cortisone shot in that shoulder in the last 12 months
