This trial tests whether draining fluid that builds up around the lungs helps patients with breathing problems in the intensive care unit. You may be eligible if you are in the ICU, have at least 2 cm of fluid on an ultrasound or CT scan, and need extra oxygen or a breathing machine.

Who can take part
- Are 18 years or older
- Are currently in the ICU as an emergency admission
- Have at least 2 cm of fluid around your lung seen on an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI
- Have trouble breathing and need extra oxygen, a breathing machine, or have certain blood gas results
- Do not already have a drain in your chest
- Do not have blood, air, infection, or cancer in the space around your lung
- Are not on blood thinners that cannot be safely reversed
- Are not pregnant or have had a hysterectomy or C-section during this hospital stay
- Are expected to stay in the ICU for at least 24 more hours
- Can provide consent as required by Danish law
