Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old and in the emergency department.
  • You have fluid around your lung seen on a scan (ultrasound, X-ray, or CT).
  • Your doctor says you need a procedure to drain the fluid to help you breathe or to find the cause.
  • You are NOT on blood thinners that would make the procedure risky.
  • You do NOT have life-threatening breathing trouble, previous lung scarring from pleurodesis, or fluid that is pocketed or infected.
