Ultrasound test for liver stiffness in children with bile flow problems

Who can take part

  • Your child must be between 0 and 18 years old.
  • Your child must have a confirmed diagnosis of cholestatic liver disease, which is a condition where bile flow is blocked or slow. This can be confirmed by a liver biopsy or by blood tests showing high alkaline phosphatase or high bilirubin.
  • The cholestatic liver disease must have been present for at least 3 months.
  • Your child cannot have fluid buildup in the belly (ascites) from causes other than the liver disease.
  • Your child cannot have any tumors or other growths in the liver.
  • Your child cannot have other serious health problems like heart failure, kidney failure, or a mental illness.
  • Your child cannot have had a liver transplant.
