- You are between 18 and 80 years old.
- You have a complicated pleural effusion (fluid around the lung with signs of infection or acidity).
- The fluid volume is more than 300 mL based on a CT scan.
- You do not have allergies to baking soda or saline.
- You do not have severe bleeding problems, heart or kidney failure, or certain chronic lung diseases.
