Who can take part

  • Your child must weigh between 2 and 8 kilograms (about 4.4 to 17.6 pounds).
  • Your child must have severe lung or heart failure that a doctor says needs a machine to help breathe and pump blood (ECMO).
  • Your child must be born at 34 weeks of pregnancy or later (not premature).
  • Your child must not have an allergy to heparin (a blood thinner) or a history of HIT (a reaction to heparin).
  • Your child must be able to safely receive blood thinners (anticoagulation) during the treatment.
