Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older
- You are having a total hip or knee replacement surgery
- Your health status is rated as ASA I, II, or III (generally healthy to mild/moderate disease)
- You do not have obstructive sleep apnea
- You are at least 150 cm tall
- You are not taking certain blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors or calcium channel blockers) that affect alpha-2 receptors
- You have not received intrathecal morphine, IV dexamethasone, or midazolam recently
- You can safely receive extra fluids intravenously (no severe kidney failure or heart failure)
- You have no condition that makes spinal anesthesia unsafe (like bleeding problems, severe aortic stenosis, or active infection)
