Predicting heart pressure from vein size in children

This study looks at a possible link between the size of a large vein (the inferior vena cava) and the pressure in the right side of the heart in children. If the link is strong, doctors might one day use vein size to estimate heart pressure without more invasive tests.

Who can take part

  • You are between 0 and 18 years old.
  • You need a central line (a special IV placed in a large vein) as part of your medical care at our center.
  • Your parent or guardian has given permission for you to be in the study.
  • You do not have a single-ventricle heart condition.
  • You have a normal heart rhythm (not a pacemaker rhythm).
  • You are not on a breathing machine (ventilator).
  • You do not have a blood clot in your inferior vena cava.
  • You do not have a condition called isomerism (an organ arrangement issue).
