Testing a New Way to Measure Heart Pressure in Children

This study tests a new method to measure the pressure in the large veins near the heart without causing extra harm. Children in intensive care who already have a special heart-monitoring tube will be observed to see if this new technique works accurately.

Who can take part

  • Your child is admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) or cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU)
  • You (parent or guardian) can provide written permission for your child to participate
  • Your child has a central venous catheter—a thin monitoring tube placed in a large vein near the heart (not a PICC line, which is a different type of catheter in the arm)
  • Your child does not have Glenn or Fontan heart surgery (special surgical procedures for certain heart conditions)
  • Your child does not have heterotaxy syndrome (a rare condition where internal organs are positioned differently than usual)
