This study compares two methods to lower a hormone called TSH that can make thyroid cancer grow. It is for people with advanced thyroid cancer who live in Alberta and can come to Edmonton for treatment.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have advanced differentiated thyroid cancer (including papillary, follicular, or other types) that cannot be fully removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body.
  • You live in Alberta and are willing to be treated at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton.
  • You are able to walk and take care of yourself (ECOG score 0-2).
  • You have thyroid cancer tissue available for testing (from a previous surgery or biopsy).
  • You do not have a recent heart attack, atrial fibrillation, or osteoporosis with fractures.

TSH suppression therapy for active surveillance in thyroid cancer

This trial is for patients with a small thyroid cancer (1 cm or less) that is not aggressive. It tests whether taking thyroid hormone to keep TSH low is necessary during active surveillance (watching the cancer closely instead of removing it right away).
