Who can take part

  • You are over 18 years old.
  • You are scheduled for a simple nephrectomy (kidney removal).
  • You are otherwise healthy or only have mild health conditions (classified as ASA I or II).
  • You do not have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
  • You do not have an infection or deformities in your back near the planned injection site.
  • You have no history of allergies to dexmedetomidine or fentanyl.
  • You do not take opioids regularly or have a history of opioid addiction.
  • You can understand and use a pain rating scale (no major thinking or memory problems).
