Who can take part

  • Your baby was born at or before 32 weeks of pregnancy
  • Your baby is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) within the first 24 hours of life
  • Your baby does not have a major birth defect, like a serious heart problem or a brain abnormality
  • Your baby did not have a head injury that caused a large bleed in the brain
  • The placenta was not abnormal (e.g., detached early, covering the cervix, or had a blood clot behind it)
  • There was no problem with the umbilical cord during delivery (e.g., cord accident or tearing)
  • The obstetrician agrees to perform the procedure
