  • You have an unstable neck or upper back (from a fracture, failed fusion, or tumor).
  • You are a candidate for surgery (no severe medical problems or active infections).
  • You do not have osteoporosis or brittle bones.
  • You are not taking long-term steroids (like prednisone).
  • You do not have a serious systemic disease (like rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS, or HIV).
  • You are willing to fill out health questionnaires before and after surgery.
