New classification for obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

This study is improving how doctors classify obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where your breathing stops and starts during sleep). It focuses on sleepiness and heart-related risks to help guide treatment. If you are 40 or older and have untreated OSA, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are 40 years old or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with at least 5 breathing pauses per hour during a sleep study.
  • At least 70% of your breathing pauses are obstructive (caused by a blocked airway), not central.
  • You have not received any sleep apnea treatment (like CPAP, mouthpiece, or positional therapy) in the past year.
  • You do not use or need a breathing machine (like BiPAP) for any reason.
