Who can take part

  • You have a visible spot in your mouth that is at least 1 centimeter wide and has been diagnosed as moderate or severe dysplasia, or carcinoma in situ (a very early form of cancer).
  • You are generally healthy enough to do your daily activities without help (Karnofsky score above 80 or ECOG 0 or 1).
  • Your blood counts, liver, and kidney function are within normal limits based on a blood test taken within the last 2 months.
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the study.
  • You do not have a history of porphyria or allergies to porphyrin drugs.
  • You have not taken certain supplements (like vitamin A, beta carotene, vitamin E, selenium) or other cancer prevention drugs in the past month.
