This study compares two ways of starting tiny feedings in very premature babies. The goal is to see if a shorter or longer period of very small feedings leads to better growth and fewer feeding problems. If you are okay with your baby receiving donor breast milk when needed, this trial may be a good fit.

Who can take part

  • Your baby must weigh less than 3 pounds 5 ounces (under 1500 grams) at birth.
  • Your baby must have been born between 25 weeks and 31 weeks 6 days of pregnancy.
  • You must agree to use donor breast milk if your own milk isn't available or enough.
  • Your baby cannot have any major birth defect that affects feeding (like gastroschisis or a diaphragmatic hernia).
  • Your baby cannot be on a medicine called a vasopressor (used to raise blood pressure) in the first day after birth.
