Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 75 years old.
- You have a type of rectal cancer called adenocarcinoma, and the tumor is within about 5 inches (12 cm) of the anal opening.
- Your cancer is at stage cT3-4aN0M0 or cT1-4aN+M0 (meaning it has grown through the rectal wall or spread to nearby lymph nodes but not to distant organs).
- Your tumor is pMMR or MSS (a lab test shows normal mismatch repair proteins).
- You have not had any previous treatment for this rectal cancer, such as radiation, chemotherapy, or surgery.
- You are healthy enough for routine activities (ECOG 0 or 1), your organs work well, and you are willing to have surgery after the medicines.
