Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You are in the intensive care unit and need a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 3 days
  • You do not have a muscle or nerve disease that could interfere with the treatment
  • You do not have an injury to the phrenic nerve (the nerve that controls your diaphragm)
  • You have not had recent stomach or chest surgery that would prevent using the device
