Who can take part
- You have been diagnosed with moderate to severe depression or persistent depressive disorder that keeps coming back
- Your current depression episode has not responded well enough to antidepressant pills
- You must be taking an oral antidepressant for at least 8 weeks and be willing to keep taking it at the same dose during the study
- Your depression score on a standard questionnaire must be 22 or higher at the start of the study
- You have not had a different mental health condition as your main problem in the past year, and you are not at immediate risk of harming yourself or others
- You have not been treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for this current depression episode if it did not help
