Low-frequency TMS for bipolar depression

Bipolar Depression Depressed Phase

This study tests whether low-frequency TMS (a gentle magnetic stimulation to a specific part of the brain) can help treat depression in people with bipolar disorder who did not get enough benefit from a previous study. You must be on a mood stabilizer and not taking certain anticonvulsant medications.

Who can take part

  • You have bipolar disorder (type I or II) and are currently in a depressed episode.
  • You took part in the TRIBE study and your depression did not improve enough after 6 weeks.
  • You are not having a mixed or manic episode right now.
  • You are currently taking a mood stabilizer that helps prevent mania (like lithium, quetiapine, or aripiprazole).
  • You have not had a substance use problem (other than nicotine or caffeine) in the last 3 months.
  • You do not have any implanted metal in your head (like aneurysm clips or stimulators) that cannot be safely removed.
