Who can take part

  • Your baby must be between 24 and 44 weeks postmenstrual age (adjusted age since conception).
  • Your baby must be hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital or Brigham and Women’s Hospital newborn units.
  • If your baby has an arterial line, they must be expected to keep it for at least 12 more hours.
  • If your baby does not have an arterial line, they must have unstable blood pressure or be at risk for it, and can tolerate manual blood pressure checks every 1 to 4 hours.
  • Your baby must not have any reason that prevents placing the FlexNIRS device on their scalp or head.
  • Your baby must not have any major birth defects or genetic conditions.
