Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with pneumonia (community-acquired pneumonia) by a doctor and confirmed with a chest X-ray or CT scan.
  • You are having trouble breathing, with a breathing rate of 25 or more breaths per minute, or low oxygen levels in your blood.
  • You are not using medications to keep your blood pressure up (vasopressors).
  • You are fully awake and alert (not confused or unconscious).
  • You do not have facial injuries or recent surgery on your upper airway that would prevent using a breathing mask or machine.
  • You do not have a Do-Not-Intubate order.
