Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and critically ill.
  • You are in the hospital and doctors think you might need a breathing machine.
  • You have had both a chest X-ray and a blood gas test (a blood draw from an artery) when you were being checked.
  • You do not have a long-term lung disease like COPD or pulmonary fibrosis that is not related to your current hospital stay.
  • You are not pregnant.
