Who can take part
- You have a brother or sister who is a good match for donating stem cells.
- You have sickle cell anemia (types SS, Sβ0 thalassemia, or severe SC) and are between 12 and 50 years old.
- You have had a stroke, or two or more acute chest syndrome episodes in the last 2 years, or three or more severe pain crises per year, or need regular blood transfusions (8 or more per year for at least a year), or have high blood pressure in the lungs, or have liver problems from sickle cell.
- Your major organs work well enough: you can perform daily activities, your heart pumps 40% or more, your oxygen levels are 85% or higher, and your liver tests are not too high.
- You do not have severe lung, heart, kidney, or liver disease, active infections, HIV, recent stroke, or pregnancy/breastfeeding.
