- Your child is having heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine.
- You or your child can understand German well enough to agree to the study in German.
- Your child does not have a known genetic condition that limits life expectancy.

- Your child weighs more than 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) at the time of surgery.
