Dupilumab for COPD with airway inflammation

This study tests if a drug called dupilumab, given as a shot under the skin, can reduce airway inflammation in people aged 40-85 with moderate-to-severe COPD who also have signs of a specific type of inflammation called Type 2. It may help if you have frequent flare-ups and are already using multiple inhalers.

Who can take part

  • You are between 40 and 85 years old and have a doctor's diagnosis of COPD.
  • You must be a current or former smoker with at least a 10 pack-year smoking history (for example, smoking one pack a day for 10 years).
  • Your COPD should be moderate to severe, meaning your lung function tests show a certain level of breathing limitation.
  • You must have had flare-ups (exacerbations) that required treatment or hospitalization, or your COPD symptoms are severe enough to affect daily life.
  • You need to be on triple inhaler therapy (or dual therapy if steroids are not right for you) for at least the last 3 months.
  • Blood tests must show evidence of Type 2 inflammation, specifically a certain level of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell).

This study tests whether adding dupilumab (a biologic medication that reduces inflammation) to standard treatment after a severe COPD flare-up requiring hospitalization helps prevent future flare-ups and improves breathing. You may qualify if you were recently hospitalized for COPD with elevated immune markers and have not received certain similar biologic medications recently.
