Who can take part

  • You are 65 years or older.
  • You have iron deficiency anemia (low hemoglobin: less than 12 g/dL for women, less than 13 g/dL for men).
  • You are scheduled for multi-level lumbar fusion surgery (more than one level of your lower spine fused).
  • You are not allergic to iron injections.
  • You do not have active cancer, severe liver disease, or an autoimmune condition.
  • You have not had prior spine surgery for a tumor, trauma, or infection.
