Who can take part

  • You must be over 18 years old
  • Your COPD must be severe (stage 3 or 4), confirmed by a breathing test showing low lung function
  • Your blood carbon dioxide level must be high (60 mmHg or more) and stay high for at least 2 weeks after recovering from a flare-up, even with optimal medication or oxygen therapy
  • You cannot have other serious breathing problems like sleep apnea, being very overweight (BMI over 30), collapsed lung, large lung bullae, advanced lung scarring, chest wall disorders, or muscle/nerve diseases
  • You must not have used a breathing tube or tracheostomy in the last 2 months
  • You should not be using addictive narcotic medications
  • You must not have serious health issues like cancer, advanced liver or kidney disease
  • You cannot be pregnant
  • You must be willing and able to use the breathing machine at home (and have family support)
