Does a breathing trick reduce pain from dialysis needle insertion?

This study tests whether a simple breathing and straining technique (called the Valsalva maneuver) can lower pain when the dialysis needle is inserted into your AV fistula. If you have regular dialysis through an AV fistula and sometimes feel pain during needle placement, this approach might help you.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have been on dialysis using an AV fistula for at least 3 months
  • You have not taken any pain medication in the last 24 hours
  • Your blood pressure is between 90-160 (top number) and 60-100 (bottom number)
  • You rate your needle insertion pain as at least 1 on a 0-10 pain scale
  • You are able to safely hold your breath and bear down (Valsalva maneuver) and have no heart issues like recent heart attack or risky irregular heartbeat
  • You can understand instructions and agree to participate
