Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are currently in the hospital with new fluid around your lungs that needs to be drained.
  • You have not had tuberculosis or a bacterial infection in the same side of your chest before.
  • You have not had any treatments placed directly inside the chest on that side (like talc or clot-busting drugs).
  • You have not had surgery to remove the lining of the lung or to stick the lung to the chest wall on that side.
  • You do not have any skin infections or eczema where the procedure will be done.
