Permissive lung-protective ventilation for critically ill patients on a breathing machine

Who can take part

  • You are admitted to one of the participating ICUs.
  • You are already on a breathing machine (ventilator) and are expected to need it for at least 24 hours.
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have not been on a breathing machine for more than 1 hour in the ICU, or for more than 6 hours just before coming to the ICU (like in the operating room or ER).
  • You are not on ECMO (a heart-lung bypass machine).
  • You do not have severe chronic lung disease (COPD GOLD stage III or IV).
  • You do not have a condition that makes high carbon dioxide levels dangerous, such as recent heart ischemia or increased brain pressure from injury.
  • You do not have a nerve or muscle condition that might keep you on the breathing machine longer (like Guillain-Barré syndrome, spinal cord injury, ALS, multiple sclerosis, or myasthenia gravis).
  • You are not pregnant (if applicable), not in another similar trial, and are not receiving only comfort care.
