Who can take part
- You are 18 years old or older.
- You are admitted to the highest level of intensive care (ICU level 3).
- You have had two high blood sugar readings (above 180 mg/dL) and are being treated with insulin through an IV line.
- Your expected stay in the ICU is at least 48 hours.
- You do not have type 1 diabetes, a diabetic emergency, severe skin problems, very low white blood cell count, or a bleeding disorder.
- You are not using certain medications (like hydroxyurea or more than 4 grams of acetaminophen per day) and are not pregnant.
