Comparing two treatments for chronic back pain after surgery

Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome

This study compares two treatments for long-term back pain after surgery: a spinal cord stimulator (a device that sends mild electrical pulses to your spine) and a pump that delivers pain medicine directly to your spinal fluid. It will look at which treatment you prefer and how well it works over time.

Who can take part

  • You are 30 years old or older.
  • You have had surgery on your lower or middle back before.
  • Most of your pain (at least 75%) is in your trunk—like your back or belly—with less in your legs.
  • You have tried other treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections and they haven't helped enough.
  • You are not taking more than 15 mg of morphine (or an equivalent opioid) daily, or you can lower your dose to that amount for at least 4 weeks before the test.
  • You do not have severe weakness in your legs that makes walking difficult, and you are not planning to have another back surgery.
