Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • You have an ASA physical status of 1, 2, or 3 (a standard health rating by your anesthesiologist)
  • You are scheduled for surgery with general anesthesia
  • You are not pregnant
  • You do not have severe heart or lung conditions, such as severe valve disease, heart muscle disease, or recent heart attack
  • You have not been on certain long-term heart medications, painkillers, sedatives, or antidepressants (e.g., beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants)
